What is Standard Grey Laminate?
Standard laminate worktops are made from a particleboard or MDF core with a decorative laminate surface bonded to the top. They are the most widely sold kitchen worktop in the UK — affordable, available in a huge range of grey designs, and easy to install. Typical thickness is 38mm (also available in 22mm for certain profiles). Grey options include Formica Grey Chalkstone, Formica Platinum Cloud, Formica Brushed Concrete, Coastal Stone, Ipanema Grey Stone, Grey Haze Andromeda and Luna Nero.
What is Grey Compact Laminate?
Compact laminate is made from multiple layers of kraft paper and resin compressed under very high pressure and heat. The result is a dense, solid board where the colour and pattern run all the way through the material — not just on the surface. Typical thickness is 12mm or 20mm. Grey options include Concrete, Winter Marble, Porcelain Onyx, Iron Ore, Aria Smoke Onyx, Aria Marmara Shade and Aria Elemental Concrete.
Key Differences
Durability
Compact laminate wins clearly here. Because it is solid throughout, it is significantly more resistant to impact, much more resistant to heat (you can place hot pans on compact laminate — though we always recommend a trivet), and far more resistant to moisture. Standard laminate is perfectly durable for everyday use but has weaknesses around heat damage and moisture penetration at edges and joins.
Edge Profile
Standard laminate has an MDF or particleboard core which means the edge either needs a separate edging strip or a curved postform profile. Compact laminate has colour running all the way through, so edges can be cut and finished cleanly without revealing a different core material. This creates a much more sophisticated edge — particularly relevant in contemporary kitchen designs.
Thickness and Visual Weight
Standard 38mm laminate worktops have substantial visual presence. Compact laminate at 12mm looks notably slimmer and more refined — popular in contemporary handleless kitchens. 20mm compact laminate offers a middle ground.
Price
Standard laminate is noticeably less expensive. For a typical kitchen you might spend £200–£500 on standard laminate versus £500–£1,200 or more for compact laminate covering the same run.

Is compact laminate worth the extra cost?
For most kitchens, yes — particularly if you are doing a renovation you want to last. The improved durability, heat resistance and edge finish justify the price premium. For rental properties or lower-traffic kitchens, standard laminate offers excellent value.
Are compact laminate worktops waterproof?
Compact laminate is far more water-resistant than standard laminate — its non-porous surface resists moisture penetration well. However no laminate worktop is truly waterproof and all joints and edges should be properly sealed.
Do grey laminate worktops fade over time?
