Joining kitchen worktops is one of the steps that separates a professional-looking installation from an amateur one. A badly made join is visible, can allow water ingress, and may cause the worktop to lift over time. Done correctly, a worktop join is tight, level, and sealed against moisture. This guide walks through the process step by step for both straight butt joints and corner mitre joints.
The Two Main Joint Types
There are two ways to join kitchen worktops at a corner:
- Butt joint: One worktop runs the full length of one wall. The second worktop is cut square and butted up to the side face of the first. Simple to make, and the joint is relatively easy to seal. The main downside is that the end grain of the second piece is visible at the join.
- Mitre joint: Both worktops are cut at 45 degrees and butted together to meet at a point. When done well, a mitre joint looks cleaner than a butt joint because neither end grain is exposed — only the surface laminate meets. Requires more precise cutting and accurate alignment.
For most homeowners fitting their own kitchen, a butt joint is easier and more forgiving. Mitre joints require a jig or a very accurate guide saw — a small error in the angle and the gap is immediately visible.
Tools and Materials You Will Need
- A worktop jig (for mitre joints) or a square-edge guide (for butt joints)
- A router — a straight router with a 40mm or 50mm flush-trim bit gives the cleanest cut
- Worktop bolts (also called joint bolts or Zipbolts) — these pull the two pieces together from underneath
- Worktop seam compound or silicone sealant in a matching colour
- Clamps
- A spirit level
- Fine abrasive paper (120–180 grit)

Step 1: Mark and Cut
Measure carefully and mark the cut line on the underside of the worktop — this avoids tearout on the top surface when cutting. For a butt joint, use a square to mark a perfectly perpendicular cut. For a mitre joint, set up your jig according to the manufacturer’s instructions and clamp it securely.
Cut slowly and let the router do the work. Rushing the cut risks the bit deflecting and creating an uneven surface at the join face. After cutting, check the face with a straight edge — there should be no high or low spots. If there are, make a second router pass to flatten them out before attempting to bring the pieces together.
Step 2: Dry Fit
Before applying any sealant, dry fit the pieces together to check the join. The faces should come together flush with no visible gap along the top surface. If there is a gap at the front edge, check whether the pieces are sitting level — a difference in height between the two pieces will open up the joint at the top. Use a spirit level across both pieces to confirm they are co-planar.
If the joint is tight on top but opens at the back, the rear edge of one piece may need a small amount removed. Run the router along the join face again, taking off just enough material to allow the two faces to meet flat across their full depth.
Step 3: Drill for Worktop Bolts
Worktop bolts (Zipbolts or equivalent connector bolts) are fitted into the underside of the worktop to pull the two pieces together and hold them flat. Mark the positions for the bolt slots — typically two sets of slots per joint, positioned about 150mm from the front edge and 150mm from the back edge respectively.
Use a router or a specialist worktop bolt jig to cut the recesses. The bolt sits in a channel on each piece; tightening the central bolt draws the two faces together. Do not overtighten — enough to close the joint and hold it flush, no more. Over-tightening can bow the worktop surface.
Step 4: Apply Seam Compound and Assemble
Apply worktop seam compound (also sold as join and seal adhesive) to both faces of the join. This is a two-part adhesive that bonds the faces together and seals against moisture penetration. Work quickly — most seam compounds begin to set within a few minutes of mixing.
Bring the two pieces together and tighten the worktop bolts progressively, alternating between front and back bolts to keep the joint level. Wipe away excess compound immediately with a damp cloth before it cures. Leave the joint undisturbed for the full curing time specified by the manufacturer (typically 2–4 hours).
Step 5: Finishing the Joint
Once cured, any compound that has squeezed out above the surface can be removed carefully with a sharp chisel, taking care not to scratch the worktop. For the final seal, run a thin bead of colour-matched silicone along the back edge of the join where it meets the wall — this prevents water from getting behind the worktop.
A perfect join on a laminate worktop should be barely visible from standing height. You will see it if you look closely, but it should not gap, lift, or be visible in normal use.
Joining Solid Wood Worktops
The process for solid wood is similar, but solid wood expands and contracts with humidity changes. Leave a small expansion gap (1–2mm) at any fixed wall rather than cutting the timber hard to the wall. Seal cut end grain thoroughly with wood oil or end-grain sealer before installing. For solid wood worktops, most manufacturers recommend using purpose-made wood adhesive at the join rather than standard silicone.
When to Call a Professional
Mitre joints in particular benefit from a professional kitchen fitter’s experience. If you are not confident cutting a 45-degree angle accurately, or if the worktop run involves a complex corner or L-shape with multiple joins, it is worth getting a professional to cut and fit the worktops. An incorrect cut on a worktop cannot generally be corrected — you will need a replacement piece.
